Session V (Fri)

23. A generic metadata store for Helmholtz: The DBpedia Databus software

by Carsten Hoyer-Klick, Leon Steinmeier, (maybe also Volker Hofmann)

  • Target group: Anyone who is interested in solutions for metadata management
  • Abstract: Join our discussion on the suitability of the DBpedia Databus software for metadata management within Helmholtz. Our session focuses on understanding the Databus's features, benefits, and limitations for managing your structured metadata.
  • Objective: The DBpedia Databus software is an open-source platform offering automated provenance tracking, versioning, and interlinking of metadata records. Key session takeaways include:

1. Explore DBpedia Databus's features and benefits for Helmholtz's metadata management.

2. Share experiences on implementing the DBpedia Databus software. See some applications in the energy domain.

3. Discuss integration strategies into existing metadata management infrastructure.

  • Agenda: 1/2 hour of presentations / short tutorials, 1/2 hour of Q&A and discussion

24. Transforming pilots into sustainable services (Group II)

by Oonagh Mannix

  • Target group: not specified (max. 10 participants)
  • Abstract: Turning an idea into a pilot is exciting. Funding is obtained and staff are allocated. This support often falls away at the critical next step of scaling the pilot into a service with expanded user base. This break-out will brainstorm ideas on how to navigate the transition successfully.
  • Objective: Create a roadmap for successful pilots to turn into sustainable services.
  • Agenda: Brainstorming

25. Assessment, implementation and dissemination of project results within and outside of the HMC community (Group II)

by Emanuel Söding, Inken Kruse

  • Target group: Hubs, Projekt PIs, data stewards (max. 15 participants)
  • Abstract: The project is over – how do we deal with the results? To this date, 28 projects have developed and are currently developing tools and other deliverables to solve problems that inhibit scientific data to enter the FAIR data space. All 9 projects of the first HMC Call have ended and have each made their results available. In this breakout, we want to deal with the following questions. With the overall goal of the Helmholtz Data Space in mind:
  1. What would the ideal outcome of an HMC project look like? What is the ideal deliverable?
  2. How do we assess the generalized value of the results for various stakeholders and the data space?
  3. How can we motivate project PIs to interact with interested parties, to support the broad(er) implementation of their results?
  4. How do we address potentially interested parties to implement the project results? How do we promote the added-values to them
  5. Can we draw general conclusions from the very diverse results and implementation plans of the projects for creating use cases and for upcoming project calls?
  • Objective: see above
  • Agenda: Discussion & brainstorming

26. Training offers for project products

by Mirl Trösch, Andrea Pörsch

  • Target group: Project members who are (interested in) disseminating their project results via training (max. 20 participants)
  • Abstract: Training is a very effective and important tool for putting HMC's products into practice and to increase the visibility of the projects and HMC in general.
As the projects are very closely linked to the scientific community and develop concrete solutions for discipline-specific problems, it is possible to implement training offers that are precisely tailored to the respective needs of the target groups.
     1. We would like to learn more about already existing formats that the projects have developed and gather ideas, how projects who are interested in outreach and training activities could start such an offer.
    2. We would like to discuss, what the needs of the projects are in terms of outreach and training and how the HMC Office can provide support.
    3. We would also like to talk about which target groups should be reached and which formats can best achieve this. In terms of advertisment we will discuss suitable chanels and how the Office could support here.
  • Objective: 1. gather perspectives  2. generate ideas on how joint training offers can be organised  3. ideally, identify people who will continue to work together on this topic after the meeting.
  • Agenda: Discussion

27. HMC and AI touching points

by Stefan Dvoretskii, Marco Nolden

  • Target group: HMC members who are interested in working on this topic, HMC projects which include AI (artificial intelligence) or ML (machine learning) questions and could contribute to the collection of requirements (max. 20 participants)
  • Abstract: “AI-readiness” of data is a hot topic which is sometimes considered to be part of FAIR 2.0. This topic has attracted many participants to engage in vivid discussions at recent Helmholtz event. There is a frequent demand from the professionals involved in AI projects for consultations on how to manage metadata, which metadata are important and further metadata concerns. Another possibility for more HMC-AI interaction is the recent Foundation Model initiative of Helmholtz with four funded projects and an upcoming call for another round of projects offers a lot of opportunities for HMC to engage in cross-center and cross-domain activities. This could encompass support and guidance both for training, evaluation and enhanced FAIRness of the resulting models.
  • Objective: In this session we would like to identify stakeholders and interested persons, and discuss possible routes for further engagement. Output would be next steps, and maybe ideas for an upcoming task force.
  • Agenda: Brainstorming & discussion

28. Open Session

29. Building a Community Platform for the HMC project

by Philipp S. Sommer

  • abstract: To improve the communication in and between the projects, and to provide a place to put information, material and discuss, we are building a community portal at https://community.helmholtz-metadaten.de. All HMC funded projects have been imported into this platform and can use it's functionality to share their results and communicate. We want to use this open session to show the platform and to discuss, what is needed by the projects and how we can embed this in HMC.
