6 Brainstorming on scenarios related to the network design studies to be performed in WP3

The network design studies to be performed in WP3 with respect to marine navigation, numerical weather prediction, land-based Arctic short-range and climate predictions, and Arctic land ice are intended to support the medium-term further development of the corresponding pilot services of Arctic-Passion. The intention of this breakout session is to enter the discussion with members of the concerned pilot services on the design of the observational scenarios to be considered in WP3.

7 Project communications: What’s the news? Tell about your Arctic PASSION work

The EU Polar Cluster is a collaboration of 18 collaborative EU-funded projects - Arctic, Antarctic, Polar - and supported by two permanent organisations the European Polar Board (EPB) and SIOS the Svalbard Integrated Observing System.
Pilot Services - please come, and all are welcome. E.g. to discuss collaborations with ESA Polar Science Cluster, stakeholder engagement, data management.
Arctic PASSION has a strong role in this (WP6) - we can make this work for you if you input your ideas.

17 Combining Indigenous Knowledge/Traditional Knowledge and Science (WP1.1 and WP4.1)

This session is devoted to a dialogue between IK holders and those scientists and WP and PS groups that are working to have a dialogue between IK and science in Arctic PASSION. Backcasting, the establishment of baselines, ownership and authorship, free, prior and informed consent and best practices are expected to be shared.

18 Shared Arctic Variables: Sea Ice

The breakout session was co-chaired by Ilkka Matero (SIOS-KC) and Andrew Fleming (BAS). The session started with a short introduction to Shared Arctic Variables and the motivation behind choosing sea ice as a theme to develop a proposal for SAV by Ilkka Matero. The introduction was followed by approximately 45 minutes of open discussion on SAVs in general, the scope and scale to proceed with the sea ice SAV, as well as who to invite in the process.

Outcomes: Support and ideas on how to take the work forward as well as identified a few key contacts to include in the discussions in the upcoming months.

19 State of the Arctic Climate and Environment web service (WP4.3)

In this session, we will discuss which indicators to present in the web service; what is needed to build a service that represents Arctic change across geography and spheres? In particular, we would like to hear about Pan-Arctic data sets that can be made available through the other pilot services and from ILK/CBM partners.

21 Bringing the Arctic Data System into action

The ambition of the Arctic PASSION data management is to “bring the Arctic Data System to action”. This indicates that data would be integrated into work flows and value chains. Lessons learned from similar activities, indicates that this implies harmonising data documentation, adhering to the FAIR guiding principles and enabling web services on top of data allowing for integration of data into decision support systems of various
communities. In the session we will discuss how communities like WMO, GBIF, ESGF have addressed this, how regional frameworks like INSPIRE addresses this and how Arctic PASSION can navigate, promote and bridge approaches in the context of the joint SAON/IASC Arctic Data Committee.
