2–9 Jul 2026 In-Person Event
Hochjoch Hospiz Ötztal Alps
Europe/Berlin timezone

Course content:

This field trip will bring you to Hochjoch-Hospiz, a basic mountain lodge in Austria (2413m), surrounded by the stunning summits of the Ötztal Alps. It will introduce you to the fundamental principles of glaciology in the field.

The field exercise complements the theory outlined in the lectures in glaciology (Module "Glaziologie“ at the University of Bremen, with WiSe lectures „Allgemeine Glaziologie“ and „Feldmethoden der Glaziologie“). Exercises will be carried out on the surrounding glaciers. The course covers geophysical measurements (like radar, seismics, gravimetry), classical field glaciology (snow pits, stake measurements), as well as geodesy (GPS). You will learn how to determine the inner structure of a glacier, its geometry, and the controlling boundary conditions.

For more information, please see also impressions from the field trip 2014and the webpage KEG.

Participants are expected to have a reasonable level of fitness. Warm and weather-proof clothing is a must; special equipment is not needed. Expect daytrips with up to 8 hours per day on the glacier.

Target group:

PhD candidates and Postdocs from geology, geophysics, glaciology, modeling, and related subjects.
