Data is the raw material of the 21st century for research, innovation and business. Digital sovereignty requires free, uninfluenced and traceable access to information - in other words, open Internet searches with systematic access to web data. Currently, there is a monopoly in web-based information search: In Germany and Europe, more than 90% of all web searches are conducted via Google's commercial and advertising-optimized search infrastructure. This holds immense potential for intentional or unintentional manipulation in access to data, information, technology and knowledge (cognitive/economic bias).
New concepts for a distributed and open search infrastructure are needed, especially for science and thus also for Helmholtz. Web data and information must become more accessible through uninfluenced access and retrieval for scientific, business and society. This warrants the basis for free research and innovation. Against this background, a European initiative is currently forming by science and computing centers to develop concepts for a next generation internet search.
During this online workshop we will discuss how the Helmholtz Association could take up and support the open search initiative with its existing capacities and know-how. For example, Helmholtz activities on the use of structured web data repositories could be bundled and pilot applications in areas such as information search and retrieval, knowledge management or information assessment and transparency could be strengthened and further developed.
