Software publications with rich metadata: Towards Helmholtz software KPIs (preliminary content)

Instructor: TBA

Date: 12 October 2023
Time - TBA

The aim of the workshop is to build on existing work in HMC around software publications with rich metadata, and discuss how this work can inform the software indicators currently under development, and future reuse of existing solutions to implement the indicators in a usable way.

A preliminary abstract would be “Indicators for software developed within the Helmholtz Association are currently being developed. They take into account FAIR software publications that are citable, and aim to further indicate the quality of the published software. Quality criteria can be  – and are – at least partially expressed in the metadata for software publications. The HMC project HERMES helps users automate the publication of their software projects and versions together with rich metadata that goes beyond the scope of the FAIR for Research Software Principles. HERMES can automatically harvest and process quality metadata, and submit them to tool-based curation, approval and reporting processes. In this workshop, we discuss the opportunities that automatically gathered rich metadata presents for optimizing reporting based on FAIR and quality criteria for research software. Specifically we explore opportunities for informing the developed software indicators from automatically collected metadata, the implementation of collecting reporting data, pitfalls that may present themselves when collecting and assessing software quality criteria, and potentials for reuse of existing solutions.“
