Once a year the Program Board invites scientists from the seven Helmholtz Centers participating in and contributing to the research program "Changing Earth - Sustaining our Future" with nine topics, Program Objectives, CCAs, InnoPool projects, the SynCom team, the Management Board and the Management-Team to exchange information and ideas, to share developments and advances, to swap insights and strategies.
This year the focus will be on Early Career Researchers. With Poster Sessions, an Ideas Market, Breakout groups, presentations and enough time in-between you will have the chance for discussions, exchanging and crossing new ideas and projects between ECRs and senior scientists. In 2023 you have the opportunity to meet up to 350 participants in Karlsruhe back to back with the meeting of the Strategic Advisory Board (May 17th).
At the Closing Session, for the first time, there will be the awarding of two prizes for the best scientific posters (submissions to the Ideas Market and for the 2. Poster Session).
*Contributions to the certain sessions are an important component of the General Assembly - as well as for other conferences the Program Board still reserves the right for contributions to be reordered or not to be taken into account.

Poster contributions will be organized by the Program Objectives writing teams, kick-off with Guided Tours
(meet the Program Board and the members of the Program Objective writing teams to discuss and get feedback on the new and in more detail described Objectives of the Program "Changing Earth - Sustaining our Future") - A short description of the original Program Objectives you find on the program website.

The aim of the Breakout Sessions is to inform about ongoing projects and initiatives and to discuss future goals.
All sessions are open to all participants (no closed sessions).
A new CTA „Carbon sources and sinks in the Earth’s (Surface) System“
In this breakout session we introduce a new cross-topic activity (CTA) in the research domain Earth&Environment. The major strategic objective of the proposed CTA is to bring together experts on carbon cycling from the full range of relevant fields in the Helmholtz Research Domain Earth & Environment and explore links to the Research Domain Energy.
We aim to focus on two main aspects:
1) Identification of knowledge gaps in understanding of the C-Cycle (budgets, residence times, unknown and unqualified processes)
2) Working towards applying this knowledge to enhance C drawdown mechanisms for potential Carbon Dioxide Removal (CDR) approaches
In this context we also discuss the new and upcoming SynCom activity on CDR.
Mainstreaming Environmental Assessment for Complex Exposure
The cross-cutting activity MACE creates a platform to develop overarching activities in the program "Changing Earth" and “Health”. MACE strives to synthesise results of environmental and human health research to support solution-oriented risk assessment and management of novel entities, which are chemicals and other types of materials of anthropogenic origin, including (micro)plastic and man-made particles.
The Helmholtz climate initiative REKLIM is a research network of competence-driven modules. REKLIM produces and disseminates regional climate change information for societal use. REKLIM addresses the complete chain from knowledge generation to action. Here, we invite colleagues to learn more about REKLIM and to participate in its further development.
Presentation of cross-compartment and cross-scale observation for meteorological and hydrological extremes: MOSES deployments are presented using the examples of the Swabian campaigns 2021/2023 and recent campaigns along the continuum river-estuary-ocean.
Session organized by KIT, hereon, UFZ
Citizen science is successfully implemented as a participatory research approach in many Helmholtz Centres and is currently experiencing growing interest and popularity in research, politics and civil society. In our workshop we will present the plan to establish a Helmholtz Cooperation Across Research Fields (CARF) on citizen science and participatory research for social innovation, and discuss its goals, structure and activities at four World Café tables.
The DataHub of the Research Field Earth and Environment is a joint initiative of all centers of the Helmholtz Association participating in the research program 'Changing Earth'. Three SubHubs assigned to the compartments of the Earth system jointly form the DataHub. Within the DataHub, FAIR data management is practiced to enable data science. Here, we invite colleagues to learn more about the DataHub and to participate in its further development.
The Ideas Market will be a plattform to networking with the aim to elaborate how to use the competences we have in the Helmholtz centers for connecting existing porjects and to get ideas for new ones.
Hazard and Resources in Reykjanes, Hengill, Theistareykir and Krafla, Iceland
On behalf of the Research Field „Earth and Environment“ seven Helmholtz centers have established seven novel joint acitivities for talent management und career development. We are going to pay special attention to the upcoming events and programs with open slots for participation.
Over the past years, the Helmholtz AI Consultants for Earth and Environment have provided extensive support to a wide range of research projects across the programme topics, including applications of AI/ML in Earth System Modelling, remote sensing, seismology and marine sciences.

Atmospheric moisture, instability, and lift are the key ingredients necessary for the formation of heavy rain-producing clouds. We will present three different instrument combination (payloads) measuring atmospheric profiles on a weather balloon.
From heavy precipitation to flood: what measurements and models do we need for successful forecasts? New developments and ideas will be presented using the examples of current MOSES campaigns and recent extreme events in Germany.
Imaging is a central aspect of automation in toxicity testing - supporting the goal to increase the throughput and content in bioanalytical assessment of the many still uncharaterised chemicals in commerce. Both KIT and UFZ have developed tools to support imaging and automation in alternative test systems ranging from automated specimen positioning and video recording, facitlitated labelling and machine learning-driven semantic segmentation to automated workflows to derive effect concentrations and patterns.
50 sound clips from the Arctic and Antarctic oceans have been available to sound artists as well as musicians from all over the world for composition since last late summer. Now, the resulting creatively interpreted pieces have been released at https://citiesandmemory.com/polar-sounds/.
