The supervision of doctoral researchers is a demanding task in which supervisors face manifold challenges. Trainings and workshops provide FZJ supervisors with a number of tools and first-hand experiences to improve the supervision experience and communicate more effectively with their doctoral researchers.
With this objective in mind, the Supervisors’ Forum organized the first workshop for supervisors in 2019. About 50 scientists from various disciplines gathered in the lecture hall of the central library in Jülich and participated in the one-day workshop “Supervision 101”, which combined impulse talks with practical hands-on group exercises.
To offer regular workshops for supervisors in Jülich, the JuDocS Council Working Group “Supporting Actions for Supervisors” (JuWAS) was founded in 2021 and organized the virtual workshop “Supervision for supervisors” in December 2021. About 80 scientists took advantage of the workshop to inform themselves about topics like intercultural impacts in distance supervision or to exchange ideas in discussion forums about typical problems and pitfalls in supervising doctoral researchers.
Also this year, the JuWAS working group offers a workshop for supervisors, which will be held on 23 May 2023 from 08:30 to 14:00. Very much in the spirit of the first workshop, the event comprises a mixture of impulse talks and practise sessions on the following topics:
• Goal setting and evaluation
• Communication and conflict resolution
• Supervision culture in FZJ
Supervisors of all institutes are cordially invited to participate. We kindly ask for a binding registration for participation (button below), there are no fees for participation.
