Fundamentals of Scientific Metadata for Health

Please note: This is an on-site course!

HMC and the Max Delbrück Center are excited to offer the course"Fundamentals of Scientific Metadata for Health" as part of the HIDS Data Science course portfolio!

This course is designed for scientists from the scientific discipline Health especially those working with datasets and is an entry-level introduction to the fundamentals of scientific metadata.

In this course we will look at the intricate relationship between (digital) research data, metadata and knowledge, discuss why metadata is critical in today's research, as well as explain some of the technologies and concepts related to structured machine-readable metadata.

So whether you're trying to understand data shared by a collaborator or revisiting your own work months after publication, this course will teach you how to enhance your data by properly annotating it with metadata – because context matters.

Learning Goals

Day 1:

  • Understand Data and Metadata
  • Understand structure and Schema

Day 2:

  • Learn about enabling technologies and standards

  • Learn about Web location and Persistent Identifiers

Prerequisites

No prior knowledge needed. To participate in this course, you need to bring your own laptop.

Target Group

This course is targeted at scientific staff and researchers from the Max Delbrück Center and from the Helmholtz Hub Health (PhD students, early-career researchers and Postdocs), who would like to better understand research data annotation with metadata.
