Course content:
This course will provide an introduction to marine robotic systems. It will give you an overview of the different kinds of robots: Remotely Operated Vehicles (ROV), Autonomous Underwater Vehicles (AUV), Uncrewed Surface Vessels (USV), and Uncrewed Aircraft Systems (UAS, also known as Drones). We will look into the common principles, how these systems function, and learn about their main components. In practical exercises, you will be introduced to operating a range of marine robotic systems. This will help you to use the advantages of marine robotic systems for various applications in your future research.
Target group:
This course is aimed at PhD candidates who have an interest in using marine robotic systems or want to learn more about state-of-the-art robotic technologies. You do not need any prior experience, but an idea of how you could potentially use robotic systems in your research would be beneficial.
Pre-requisites:
- Interest in marine robotic systems and their application
- Steel-toe safety shoes (if you have to borrow, please indicate your shoe size on registration)
- Working clothes (something that can get dirty, so not your newest fashion)
- Weather-proof clothing for field exercises (e.g., rain jacket)
More information:
The course will start with a theoretical introduction to marine robotic systems on the first day, which will include some first hands-on work (likely on ROVs) in groups in the AWI Technikum.
This will be followed by more practical hands-on training on the second day, which might include short field excursions to the vicinity of Bremerhaven or workshops in the AWI Technikum. This will likely also cover AUVs and UAVs (Drones).
Which systems exactly will be presented in the course depends on their availability in the busy expedition schedule and many other factors. Hence, the details of the course program and content are subject to change on short notice, but we do our best to present a wide variety of platforms.
Our courses are generally free of charge for all participants. However, they do have a price and can cost SEA / the AWI as much as 150 € per day per student. Please take this into account when cancelling your place at the last minute. Please, always send cancellations to sea.courses@awi.de
