Course content:

The Nagoya Protocol is an internationally binding treaty that needs to be observed by all researchers in the fields of Biology, Biochemistry, Bioinformatics, Biotechnology, organic Geochemistry, or the like. It does not only apply to applied/commercial science involving genetic analyses, but also to non-commercial, basic research. The term “genetic resource” furthermore, can be very misleading as it does not only refer to DNA and RNA, but to biological material in general: Entire specimen of Algae, Fungi, Bacteria or Fish, extending to any material of animal, plant, microbial, or any other origin that contains functional units of heredity are enclosed. Also, derivatives created through genetic expression and metabolism are subject to the legislation.

This Seminar will focus on the practical implementation of the Nagoya Protocol on access to genetic resources and the fair and equitable sharing of benefits arising from their utilization for basic researchers. Instead of financial compensation, the participation of local scientists in research projects is one alternative way to exchange benefits, with the aim of promoting international collaboration and thus nature conservation.

Compliance with the regulations is not voluntary, but required by law. Possible penalties include, but are not limited to: prohibition and retraction of already published articles, confiscation of sample material, or travel bans. Such consequences have a negative impact on early career scientists in particular, who should therefore familiarize themselves with the procedures at the beginning of their research projects.

Target group:

Master Students, PhD candidates, Postdocs, Nagoya Newbies, and anyone else interested, especially those working in the fields of biology, biochemistry, bioinformatics, biotechnology, organic geochemistry, and related disciplines.
