In fall 2024, a Joint Declaration of Intent regarding Germany's potential future participation in ELI ERIC was signed by Czechia, Hungary and Germany.

The present workshop aims to fill this declaration with life by providing the framework for scientific discussions with key experts from the ELI facilities to explore possibilities of initiating and intensifying collaboration in laser-induced fusion, while also expanding the scope to include plasma and high-energy density physics in general, novel accelerator developments enabled by lasers and plasmas and strong-field QED.

The agenda will constitute of a mixture of short talks and ample room for discussion and brainstorming in an inspiring atmosphere with around 25 participants. Topics will include amongst others

  • Presentations of successful projects realised at ELI
  • Overview of the current technical capabilities of ELI
  • Pitch talks proposing large-scale projects, potentially requiring substantial investments, and that would to be set-up in a collaborative effort and ideally be (co-)financed by BMFTR as part of an intensified German engagement in ELI
  • Brainstorming on scenarios for a prospective German membership in ELI that would ensure that ELI complements, rather than replaces national facilities

Active engagement of the participants by short presentations will be strongly encouraged.

The outcome will be summarized in a short opinion paper of the research community.

The workshop will be organised as a two half-day in-person event in Dresden, starting in the late afternoon, concluding the first day by a joined dinner and ending on the following day after lunch.
