organized in cooperation with Helmholtz Information & Data Science Academy (HIDA) and Helmholtz Imaging
3D Data Visualisation
Join us for an engaging 4-day workshop where you'll bring your own volumetric datasets to life through 3D visualization. We'll start with impulse sessions on topics like volumetric rendering, mesh processing, and browser visualization. Then you'll apply these techniques directly to your data. We focus on processing pixel / voxel based datasets, but you are welcome to bring other volumetric data types. Along the way, you'll work with tools like BigVolumeViewer, Blender, and Neuroglancer. Programming skills will be helpful to get the most out of the experience. Do you have experience in rendering or are you developing a visualization strategy? You are very welcome to join and share your expertise! We will also dive into the art of scientific storytelling, which is essential to an impactful visualization. The workshop wraps up with a gathering where we will share images and experiences.
Please note: This is an on-site course and takes place at the Helmholtz Information & Data Science Academy, Anna-Louisa-Karsch-Str. 2, 10178 Berlin.
Learning Goals
Day 1: 3D Data Types, Image Assessment, and Volumetric Rendering
-
Differentiate 3D data types, such as voxel-based images, meshes, and point clouds.
-
Assess basic image information for unknown datasets.
-
Learn the basics of volumetric rendering.
Day 2: Web-Based Viewers, Mesh Processing and Fancy Rendering
-
Use browser-based tools for 3D visualization.
-
Convert pixel based datasets into meshes.
-
Mesh visualization and optimization.
- Improve your visualizations using Blender.
- Evening: Visit to the Planetarium Berlin.
Day 3: Storytelling with Visualization / Project Work
-
Explore Virtual Reality and Scientific Story Telling.
-
Start working on your own datasets with guidance.
Day 4: Project Work and Presentations
-
Work on your visualization projects.
-
Participate in group feedback and showcase.
Prerequisites
Participants should apply with a 3D dataset they wish to visualize during the workshop. Please ensure your dataset is available at the time of the workshop (ideally even publicly accessible) and provide a description of it when applying. Basic programming skills—especially in Python—are helpful for engaging with tools and scripting tasks we'll cover. If in doubt, please contact deborah.schmidt@mdc-berlin.de before registering.
Target Group
This workshop is open to anyone interested in visualizing volumetric scientific datasets, regardless of their field or experience level. We welcome both participants with datasets to visualize and developers working on visualization tools themselves.
