Description

Speakers: Roger Urgeles (Institut de Ciències del Mar, CSIC), Finn Løvholt (Norges Geotekniske Institutt, NGI), Jorge Macias (Universidad de Málaga)

Research fields: Specialists of all scientific fields, and on all career stages are welcome

Target audience: PhD students, technicians, researchers, and practitioners working in offshore geohazard assessment

Scope: The workshop will use Geo-INQUIRE data and software to provide understanding on how to assess geohazard from submarine landslides and derived tsunamis. It will use a hands-on-examples approach to

  1. Extract information for and from the EMSS
  2. Understanding EMSS parameters and their relevance for landslide tsunami simulation as well as assessment of landslide hazard and tsunami hazard from submarine landslides
  3. Develop workflows for landslide tsunami simulations from the EMSS
  4. Assess tsunami initiation and propagation from submarine landslides using deifferent codes made available through Geo-INQUIRE and beyond

Learning Goals: Use Geo-INQUIRE data and software, including the Euro-Mediterranean Submarine landSlide database, BingClaw and HySEA landslide to provide a basic understanding on how to assess geohazard from submarine landslides and derived tsunamis, including:

  • Get acquainted with data products and services available through EPOS and Geo-I for landslide tsunami analysis
  • Understand parameters for landslide tsunami analysis and how to generate them
  • Generate data relevant for landslide dynamics and tusnami simulation
  • Developing workflows for tsunami simulation from submarine landslides
  • Develop landslide simulation capabilities
  • Develop tsunami simulation capabilities
  • Understanding outputs from different landslide tsunami models

Description: The workshop will use Geo-INQUIRE data and software, including the Euro-Mediterranean Submarine landSlide database (VA2-33-5, VA2-33-6, VA2-33-7), BingClaw (VA4-532-1) and HySEA (VA4-531-4) landslide to provide a basic understanding on how to assess geohazard from submarine landslides and derived tsunamis.

The Euro-Mediterranean Submarine landSlide database (EMSS21) is a catalogue of submarine landslides of the Mediterranean Sea and the European continental margins of the Atlantic and Arctic Oceans. During the course we will review and generate database attributes using an example and learn to use those for determining landslide geometric and dynamic parameters for landslide tsunami simulation.

Mass Mov2DH2O and BingClaw (VA4-532-1) are two models for simulating the dynamics of cohesive (clay-rich) landslides. We will use those to generate input data for tsunami smilation using GeoClaw.

The HySEA landslide-tsunami model (VA4-531-4) consists of two systems of coupled equations for a) the landslide material and b) the water dynamics model. We will apply HySEA to the same scenario.
