Data Carpentry’s aim is to teach researchers basic concepts, skills, and tools for working with data so that they can get more done in less time, and with less pain. This workshop uses a tabular ecology dataset and teaches data cleaning, management, analysis and visualization.
This workshop covers
- data organisation with spreadsheets: Learn how to organize tabular data, handle date formatting, carry out quality control and quality assurance and export data to use with downstream applications.
- data cleaning with OpenRefine: Explore, summarize, and clean tabular data reproducibly.
- analysis and plotting with Python: Import data into Python, calculate summary statistics, and create publication-quality graphics.

Target Group
This workshop is intended for anyone working with tabular data (data with rows and columns, e.g. Excel). The data used for this workshop is an ecology dataset - counts of animal species that were observed in different locations over time, along with information about their sex, weight, etc. This data is easily understandable by non-ecologists.
This workshop is sponsored by Helmholtz Information & Data Science Academy (HIDA) in cooperation with The Carpentries.
