Description

ACK Cyfronet, Institute of Geophysics Polish Academy of Sciences and Geo-INQUIRE are pleased to invite participants to an stationary workshop in a form of the datathon "Energy production related Geohazard estimation – EPISODES platform datathon".

Magnitude is a crucial parameter to evaluate the size of an earthquake. Several methods are described in literature, but one of the most reliable methods is moment magnitude. Estimation of this magnitude in anthropogenic seismic events may allow for better understanding of the seismogenic process leading to such events. It may also be used to calibrate the other magnitude estimates for particular seismic events.

Support from Geo-Inquire: Geo-inquire will cover all cost related to venue, accommodation, meals during lunches and social event, and training materials. Travel cost will be reimbursed after the event up to maximum cost of 300 EUR.

Participation fee: No participation fee for this event.

Date: 9-11 April 2025

Venue: ACK Cyfronet, Nawojki 11, 30-950 Cracow

Accommodation: Novotel Kraków City West, Armii Krajowej 11, 30-150 Cracow

Lunches: Restauracja UP Armii Krajowej 9 Cracow

Social event: Kluska na Placu, Plac Szczepański 7, Cracow

Workshop language: English

Target audience: PhD and Master students in Earth Science related fields, Academia, geohazard industry profesionals

Prerequisites: Basic knowledge of geophysics and programming in python or matlab. EPISODES platform account. Priority will be given to people with documented activity in geohazard studies/applications

EPISODES Platform (episodesplatform.euis a digital tool (virtual laboratory) which provides open access to the integrated research infrastructures of EPOS TCS AH - episodes (datasets), applications (software), workspace, HPC, collaboration functionalities and document repository. EPISODES Platform gives users the possibility to: analyze anthropogenic seismicity and related hazards, assess the potential impact of geo-resources exploitation, use educational resources on anthropogenic hazard.

Scope: The task in datathon (hackathon like event) is to prepare an application to calculate moment magnitude and/or duration magnitude and preparation of calibration curves with local magnitude for big data sets available in EPISODES/EPOS TCS AH platform. The proposed datasets would be reservoir triggered episodes or other episodes related with geoenergy production.

The learning goals: Preparation of the application to calculate magnitudes of the anthropogenic seismic events with use of the EPISODES platform resources. Application will be prepared as a standalone software executable in Python or matlab. Participants will learn how to write processing codes, test then, apply to big data sets and visualise the results.

EPOS Thematic Core Service Anthropogenic Hazard and Geo-INQUIRE welcome anyone interested in learning about these concepts and tools, particularly early-career students, researchers, cross-disciplinary scientists at all career stages and catastroph modellers.
