Gamma-ray bursts are some of the biggest explosions since the Big Bang, releasing as much energy in seconds as the Sun will emit in its entire lifetime. They were discovered accidentally in the middle of the last century, and many questions remain about their nature. They are multiwavelength and multimessenger phenomena; they emit photons across the electromagnetic spectrum, and gravitational waves were detected in coincidence with a gamma-ray burst in 2017. In order to observe these brief and rapidly fading transients, special observational strategies and communication methods are needed.

This presentation examines the diverse journey of EPICS developers, focusing on their role in designing and implementing control systems for various international projects. It covers the main aspects of the EPICS development process, from gathering requirements and system design to software development, integration, and maintenance. Real-world examples will illustrate the developer’s work on major international collaborations, like particle accelerators, synchrotrons, and large-scale scientific experiments, highlighting the unique aspects of each project and their respective pros and cons. Attendees will learn about the challenges and solutions in building reliable control systems for scientific use. The talk will also discuss the teamwork and cross-disciplinary communication in EPICS projects, along with the ongoing advancements in technology and methods. The presenters will share personal experiences to inspire and educate current and future EPICS developers about their career paths in control system engineering.
