In this school, which will be run by the SPP "Physics of Parasitism" in cooperation with the ETN PHYMOT, you will be introduced to concepts in modern simulation science. The school addresses experimentalists, theorists, and simulators. In preparatory lectures, participants who are not yet experienced with simulations will be introduced to basic techniques. In addition, the experimental prerequisites, opportunities, and challenges for simulation studies will be discussed. The core module of the school is topical lectures and hands-on exercises for a selection of parasite-relevant simulation techniques. Existing parasite models will be used to illustrate the awesome predictive power of computer simulations. Finally, a module on Machine Learning will provide an introduction to contemporary techniques for image processing and beyond.
How is the school content connected with parasites? The school will offer lectures on simulation techniques for various elements or processes relevant for simulating parasites and their environment. For example, all biological cells are bounded by lipid membranes and provided with stability and active elements through the cytoskeleton. Random motion within the cells is often not purely thermal. Adhesion and migration are important processes for the interaction of parasites with their surroundings and force generation. In many cases, hydrodynamic flow is key to modeling the environment of parasites.
Who will be the lecturers?
Can I participate in only part of the school? Indeed the program is modular! We offer introductory lectures on Monday until at 3:00 p.m. that you can skip if you regularly work with simulations. The core module with topical lectures and hands-on exercises takes place between Monday at 3:30 p.m. and Thursday evening. If you would like to learn more about Machine Learning and participate in hands-on exercises related to Machine Learning or Image Processing, then you should stay also for Friday.
What do you offer to me as a simulation newbie? You will learn about various simulation techniques relevant to studying parasites and get hands-on experience. Previous experience with computer simulations and programming is not required. Three introductory lectures especially aimed at those not yet familiar with simulations will be offered on Monday.
What do you offer to me as an experienced simulator? You will learn more about how to simulate systems that you probably have not yet worked with; hands-on tasks at different levels of difficulty will challenge not only newbies but also more experienced participants! In addition, you will have ample opportunities to discuss with experts in the field—also one-to-one if you are proactive!
What are the technical prerequisites? We will support computers running Windows, Mac OS, and Linux. The lecturers will offer optional online onboarding sessions and technical support before the school if you have to install any major software packages.
What about accommodation? We have reserved several rooms in the B&B Hotel Aachen-City, and we can send you a booking code that will allow you to book at a reduced rate. Accommodation in double rooms is 39.43€ per night and in single rooms 78.85€. Breakfast may be booked in addition for 9.45€ per day.
Will there be a bus transfer from the hotel to the research center? We will offer a free daily bus transfer from the hotel in Aachen to the seminar room and back.
When is the registration deadline? The registration deadline for the school is 31 January 2024.
Is there a registration fee? The registration fee of 100€ includes all coffee breaks, lunch on all days, dinner on Monday and Thursday, and the bus transfer between Aachen and Jülich. You will be prompted to pay if your registration is accepted. The registration fee will be waived for SPP-PoP and PHYMOT members.
Is there an early-bird fee? We offer a reduced registration fee of 80€ if you register and pay by 15 December!
Who can I contact if I have further questions? Best contact Thorsten Auth for questions regarding the scientific program, Elisabeth Meiser regarding payment and the SPP-PoP, Gerrit Vliegenthart regarding PHYMOT, and Meike Kleinen regarding all other issues.
