Scientific software is becoming increasingly important for the success of research and to generate new knowledge. Certain codes, critical for a scientific field, have all the characteristics of a research infrastructure: they are developed and maintained over decades, must meet the highest quality requirements, and need specialized personnel for operation and training of users. However, the importance of codes for science, also with respect to German and European digital sovereignty, has not yet been recognized at the national level.
The reviewers of PoF IV of the Research Field Information of the Helmholtz Association recognized at the end of 2019 that the research field in the area of scientific software is far behind the international level and threatens to fall further behind due to large differences in funding.|
HiRSE_PS, Helmholtz Platform for Research Software Engineering - Preparatory Study, is designed as a preparatory study and is currently being finded as a Innovationspool Project.
